Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis O’Brien has been linked with a surprise move to MLS just six months after the 24-year-old snubbed the likes of Leeds United and West Ham in the summer.

According to the Sun, the former Huddersfield Town star is wanted by Atlanta United, the Columbus Crew and New York City FC as O’Brien currently finds himself out of favour at Forest, with a shock move to MLS now in the pipeline for the Premier League midfielder.

O’Brien was recently unregistered from Forest’s Premier League squad having seen a January loan move to Blackburn Rovers ruled out by the EFL, with MLS now emerging as the ideal next move for the midfielder, with New York City currently the favourites to win the race.

Signed in the summer for £10m as per the Athletic, Forest had seemingly landed a coup in O’Brien after the midfielder played a massive role in Huddersfield making the Championship play-off final, attracting interest from the likes of Leeds and West Ham heading into the summer.

However, Forest were the side who one the race for O’Brien, with the Garibaldi also signing Harry Toffolo from the Terriers in a double swoop that has resulted in both players looking for loan moves away from the City Ground. However, the dup both currently remain in Nottingham.

Indeed, with MLS sides lining up to sign O’Brien, the midfielder could soon have an exit route from Forest if a New York City or Columbus can strike a loan deal for the 24-year-old, who could be an excellent player for the division ahead of the 2023 season later this month.

MLS could kick-start O’Brien’s career after disastrous Forest move

Having signed a small nation across two transfer windows, Forest were always going to struggle to integrate every new addition into the squad, and O’Brien has been one of the unfortunate casualties in such an overhaul, with an MLS move quite a suitable move for the midfielder.

The division is set for it’s biggest year ever after a historic 2022 season, and with three of the biggest teams in the Eastern Conference interested in signing O’Brien, the midfielder should be willing to take a risk this month and move to America, a move which could restart his career.
