Darryl's reputation for being a massive prick is pretty well known. Just read or watch any interview with him. "Prickly" is putting it mildly. On one of those "Daryl's House" shows, the special guest is Kenny Loggins. At one point, they are talking about Kenny's big movie soundtrack smash hits. All Daryl was interested in was the chart positions and the money while Kenny was all about the art and expression, man. After a few minutes you can tell that Kenny gets annoyed with Daryl though Daryl may have just been fucking with Kenny to get a reaction out of him.

I remember reading an interview with Daryl Hall a long time ago in which he admitted that he had hooked up with a guy or two in his younger days. He was then asked if Oates was one of the guys he'd hooked up with and he said no, that Oates wasn't his type. He was "too dark and short". I don't recall reading or hearing anything from Oates on the subject of his sexuality.

The gay rumors came directly from that silver foil album cover. They'd put out several albums already on Atlantic, to very little success, even though they were obviously very talented. When they moved to RCA, somebody there thought it would be a great idea to market them as Bowie-esque glitter rockers and had them all dolled up in makeup and looking very effeminate for the cover of their RCA debut. They hated the idea, but they went along with it because they were desperate.

There is a Medium article that references the interview and its relevant passage, and says it's from '83, but I can't find any evidence of a 1983 RS article on H&O.

There was a big RS feature on them in January1985, which I think is probably the one, but you can only read it if you have a subscription, which I don't.

In any case the quote by Daryl Hall, as referenced in the Medium article, is as follows.

My favorite H&O was their second album, Abandoned Luncheonette. I first heard it in 1976, when Atlantic re-released "Sara Smile" as a single. The album flopped in 1973.

It would be like a bi-coastal relationship -- the height difference between the two would mean that never the 'twain shall meet, quite literally.

A friend of mine (girl) was a groupie of theirs. She got fucked up the ass by Daryl Hall. He insisted on ass fucking.

A couple of years ago, Daryl Hall was on a podcast. I think it might have been Alec Baldwin's (I know, I know). He claimed that he did almost all of the songwriting, and that Oates' songwriting credits were more of a business arrangement than an actual reflection of who did what. I remember thinking that was a pretty shitty thing to say.

I would characterize them as cult artists from '72 through '75, then pretty solid hitmakers from '76-'79. They weren't a huge chart presence in the latter part of the 70's, but they did manage to keep themselves in the game with a couple of now-forgotten top 20 singles in '78 ("It's a Laugh) and '79 ("Wait For Me"). They were clearly on a downward slide at that point, though.

Then, out of the blue, they exploded and became one of the biggest acts of the early 80's. Hit after hit from '80 through '85. When they were at their career peak, they decided to take an extended break (3 years), which killed all of their career momentum. When they returned on Arista 3 years later, they managed to eke out a few forgettable hits, but the public had moved on, and they became more or less a nostalgia act by the mid-90's, though some of their songs were of pretty high quality, like 2002's "Do It For Love".

I really liked Wait For Me, but I think I heard a live version off their 1983 greatest hits album, one of my first cassette purchases at age 11.

I remember Hall and Oates as having two bluesy ballads in the Seventies (She's Gone and Sarah Smile). Later on, they had a number one hit with Rich Girl, but then disappeared again. When they resurfaced in the 80s with their album Voices, their first single was a minor hit (How Does It Feel To Be Back), then their remake of You've Lost That Loving Feeling inched into the top ten, But it was the third single , Kiss On My List, that made them superstars.

I liked the group's late '80s/early '90s hits like Missed Opportunity, Downtown Life, So Close, and Everything Your Heart Desires.

So Close was a good one. I didn't know many other children listening to Adult Contemporary at that time. My Boomer-era parents thought I was totally square.

I like Darryl - he often gives a good interview. Like his music, loved Darryl's house, but yeah, he can be a massive prick. He was once talking about being appreciated in the Black community. Hall and Oates was popular among Black people, but sometimes Black DJs, commentators, fans, would peg HO as "blue-eyed soul." Darryl had a valid point about not wanting to be pigeonholed and if fans liked the music, why tie it to race? But, the term blue-eyed soul, used by black people, has never been an insult. It's more a term of endearment for artists like Teena Marie and Hall and Oates, and he knows that. Yet, he got super pissy, went off on a big rant about it as if people celebrating his music and buying his albums made him a victim just because sometimes that description was used. Then he said something about how HO was the first group to really ever do R&B/pop crossover or something. It made no sense; they weren't. He's thoughtful and interesting, and also incredibly full of himself.
