SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – A man in his early 20s was hospitalized in “extremely critical condition” after a shooting but later died from his injuries, according to Lt. Bill Manzanares with the Salt Lake City Police Department.

Officers responded to a home at 1172 West California Avenue just before 2 a.m. Saturday.

The victim was located with a gunshot wound and taken to an area hospital where he later died from his injuries.

He was identified as 28-year-old Emilio Salazar.

On Saturday evening, police arrested Alex Mendoza, 19, in connection to the murder.

“This was after nearly 24 hours of constant follow-up by detectives to take this violent criminal off the streets,” according to a tweet from the Salt Lake City Police Department.

Manzanares said the occupants of the home were not very cooperative with detectives and there are some “gang-related ties” to the home.
