I hear that Wo Hop is pretty good. Especially for late night dining.

I used to love Charlie Mom in the village. Closed now.

OP here. Loved Charlie Moms too. High rents took it out

Yes, if I go to Chinatown, I go to Wo Hop. Been going for years. Not fancy but the food's great.

Wop Ho is really good too.

Hop Wong was mediocre, but they torn the building down @ between 42 and Fifth in favor of Price Waterhouse :(

Wo Hop late nights were a lot of fun in the 80's! I'm happy it's survived. Their General Tso's chicken and beef Chow fon were great for soaking up alcohol back then.

Whoever mentions "rangoon" which doesn't even sound like any Chinese word I've ever heard in any dialect should be publicly flogged.

[quote]General Tso's chicken
I can already tell that this entire thread will be typing fat and will revolve around American Chinese food.

Rangoon was the old Anglo name for the capital of Burma, currently performing as Myanmar.

None of these Chinese dives in Manhattan could compare with HUNG FAR LOW in Portland, back in the day. Who cares what the food was like. The name was all the mattered.

I love Shun Lee. Last ate there a decade ago but I still remember how great the meal was.

Not swish but I really like shanghai cafe on Mott for shanghai style soup dumplings/noodles. No lines like at touristy joe's shanghai.

Watch Searching for General Tso on Netflix... very enjoyable.

I love that Wo Hop is still there and doesn't seem to have changed in decades. A visit to them at 4 AM for reliable "old school" Chinese food is always satisfying. I swear the waitresses uniforms haven't changed since the 80's
My "go to" Chinese fast food when I lived on the city is Happy Wok on Delancey Street between Clinton and Suffolk. I knew their menu like the back of my hand. Their Moo Goo Gai Pan was excellent. Fried and steamed dumplings were excellent. I ate there for so long they knew me and would whip up a bowl of bok choy quick sautee-ed in oil and spices in a wok to go with my meal for $2 if I asked, or sometimes give me free something they were experimenting on, like real eggrolls with fresh ingredients they made for a while, deep fried and huge. Once they offered me something free with a fish head and I was like, "No thanks." During the blackout of 2003(?) they realized all their food might spoil and their burners still worked so they battered and fried everything in the fridge they could and stood on a table outside selling everything in paper bags for almost nothing and were sold out in an hour. I remember my boyfriend and I buying huge pieces of fried chicken for $1 each with a flashlight in total crowded darkness. Nice people!

...ugh, and I just looked on Yelp and Happy Wok on Delancey closed recently due to gentrification. Ugh, how depressing.

Joe's Shanghai, Xian Famous, Hao Noodle. Hakkasan if you're feeling fancy.

Chef Ho on the Upper West Side

There’s a place on Elizabeth Street, I don’t know the name (so very helpful, I know). Delicious dumplings and anything in black bean sauce. They’ll chase you down (quite literally) if they don’t like the tip you leave. The friend who introduced me to the place deliberately left a tiny tip, to prove it. LOL. We made it up to them in the end, don’t worry.

Anybody try the Sichuan places around town (Grand Sichuan, etc.)?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | August 1, 2019 1:10 PM |
There's a Chef Ho on the upper east side, too. My dad lived right around the corner from it and their chicken and shrimp combo is to die for.
Regarding Wo Hop - really? You go there for the t-shirt and the fact that it's open late night. The food is pretty much shit. Total tourist destination.
Grand Szichuan on 9th Ave and 24th for boiler plate: amazing sesame chicken, scallion pancakes and sublime soup dumplings.
For dim sum, Nom Wah Tea parlor is great.
Other yummy places:
-Pig Heaven on 3rd Ave
-Shanghai on 2nd Ave
-Drunken Dumlping (just for dumplings) on 1st Ave
-Joy Luck Palace (fantastic dim sum) on Mott St.

R23- I fucked up. I meant to say Chef Ho in the upper EAST side. There's only ONE Chef Ho. I love Grand Marinier Shrimp. I know I spelled it wrong.

So few places are consistent. That's always the problem for me. One day the Garlic and Pork is one way and the next entirely different.

Red Bamboo as excellent vegan Asian cuisine (some of it Chinese inspired). It gets busy at night, but you can usually find a table at lunch. Some of their seitan stirfries are my favorite meals in the city.

r23 and I could have dinner together any time... that's good list!

Any place to recommend on UWS Harlem or the Heights (where I live), thanks.
I truly am not finding anything worth going back to

I’ve recently loved Hao on 6th ave and 8th Street. They just opened a new one in Meatpacking district on 14th street. Nice decor too - vs the usual hole in the walls.
Also, Xian Famous Foods - while not traditional Chinese - is awesome. Various places in Flushing and Manhattan. Spicy noodles and dumplings. And cheaper and casual compared to Hao.

Cafe China, near the Morgan Library - the only Chinese restaurant in NYC with a Michelin star, I think, or at least used to be. Superb food.
