A nearly 40-inch steelhead caught on the Clearwater River on Sunday set a new Idaho state record.

Scott Turner caught a whopping 39.25-inch steelhead from the South Fork Clearwater River, beating Samuel Brumbaugh's previously held record by 1.25 inches.

The Boise man is an avid angler and has set multiple other records on a variety of species. However, this spring, he was on a mission to reclaim the top steelhead spot after his previous 2017 record was broken. It didn't take him long!

According to Idaho of Fish and Game, it's rare to see steelhead over 30 inches in the Gem State. During the last 13 years, Fish and Game biologists have trapped and measured about 224,000 steelhead at Lower Granite Dam as they return to Idaho, and on average, steelhead over 35 inches long only make up about 0.6 percent of the total run.

Larger steelhead are even more rare, with fish over 38 inches making up only 0.002 percent.
