His full name is Charles Thomas Munger. He was born on 1 January 1924 in Omaha, Nebraska, US. His father’s name is Alfred Case Munger, who was a lawyer, and his grandfather’s name is Thomas Charles Munger, who was a US district court judge and state representative.

After completing his schooling, Charlie Munger went on to study mathematics at the University of Michigan. With a perfect score on the Army General Classification Test, he was sent to Caltech in Pasadena, California, to study meteorology. Additionally, Munger completed many advanced courses at multiple colleges with the GI Bill. He was a standout student at Harvard Law School, earning a J.D. in 1948 with honors.

He married twice. At first, he married Nancy Huggins. The couple became parents of three children: Wendy Munger, Molly Munger, and Teddy Munger. However, they got divorced.

Soon, Charlie Munger again got married, this time to Nancy Barry. Together, they had four children: Charles T. Munger Jr., Emilie Munger Ogden, Barry A. Munger, and Philip R. Munger. With this second marriage, Charles has also become stepfather to two stepchildren named William Harold Borthwick and David Borthwick.

He died on 28 November 2023 in Santa Barbara, California, US. At the time of his death, he was 99 years old.

His career

Charlie Munger enlisted in the US Army during World War II, having left the University of Michigan in 1943 at the age of 19. Post-war, he resumed studies, practiced real estate law in Southern California, and co-founded the law firm Munger, Tolles, & Olson LLP in 1962.

After switching from practicing law to investment management, he entered into a real estate partnership with Otis Booth and went on to co-found the investment firm Wheeler, Munger, and Company.

Charlie Munger served as vice chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, the company that Warren Buffett owned; Buffett called Munger his right-hand man and closest confidant. From 1984 until 2011, Munger presided over Wesco Financial Corporation as chairman. In addition, he served as a director of Costco Wholesale Corporation and chairman of the Los Angeles, California-based Daily Journal Corporation.
