Aryna Sabalenka entered the Cincinnati Open following her quarterfinal loss to Amanda Anisimova at the Canadian Open. Prior to the event in Montreal, the Belarusian reached the semifinals of the Citi Open where Marie Bouzkova knocked her out in three sets.
Sabalenka, since her Italian Open final defeat to Iga Swiatek in May, has suffered a slump in form as she failed to reach the semifinals of the next few events. Due to her shoulder injury, she was also forced to withdraw from Wimbledon.
Elina Svitolina, at the Canadian Open, could only advance to the Round of 32 which she lost to compatriot Marta Kostyuk in three sets. Before the Canadian Open, the 2020 Tokyo Olympic bronze medalist reached the third round of the Paris Olympics where Barbora Krejcikova eliminated her in three sets. Though she failed to reach the final of any event except for the ASB Classic in January this year, she has been giving consistent performances on the WTA Tour.

Aryna Sabalenka, who is currently occupying the 3rd position in the rankings table, has won just one title this season. She clinched the Australian Open and since then, even though she came close to winning a title, failed to do so. World No. 29 Elina Svitolina, on the other hand, is yet to clinch a title.
