I'm almost the complete opposite to the top comment; I think the first Shrek suffers from relying too much on Eddie Murphy for the comedy (who I have never found funny) and for all it's great moments there's too much padding in between with Murphy and Myers trying their hardest to force various quotes into our heads that either don't really make enough sense to be necessary or just aren't funny in the slightest. I don't dislike it, but I just don't think it's as consistently funny in hindsight as people make it out to be. Shrek 2 on the other hand piles on the gags and almost never lets up, with the comedy coming from so many more directions and angles that I find it almost impossible to get bored watching it. Granted it's pop culture-heavy and probably uses more references that I or most people would consider acceptable in this day and age, but at the time, I thought it was fantastic. Plus they don't linger on them for too long, as so many modern "family" films do, but they kept shooting them rapid fire so that I never got bored. Flushed Away is a decent effort from Aardman and Dreamworks, but it's not as memorable or as funny as either of its parent studios' prominent releases, including this one. Shrek 2 wins.
