Dominic Solanke now has the extremely daunting task of following in Harry Kane’s footsteps at Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs announced the £65million arrival of Dominic Solanke on Saturday in what was a new club-record deal.

Ange Postecoglou had publicly pleaded for Tottenham to sign a striker this summer and the club have responded by reaching into their pockets.

Dominic Solanke netted 21 goals in all competitions for Bournemouth last season and arrives with the expectation of being Tottenham’s first-choice striker this season.

With the deal finalised, Solanke was welcomed to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium just in time for their final pre-season friendly of the summer against Bayern Munich.

Tottenham lost 3-2 against the German giants, with Harry Kane coming off the bench to play the final 10 minutes against his former side.

Tottenham pocketed £82million from Kane’s move to Bayern last summer and they reinvested to strengthen Postecoglou’s squad – although a direct replacement for the England captain was never found.

Richarlison and Heung-Min Son filled in and played centrally, but even between them, they were unable to get close to Kane’s usual goal tally.

Spurs have now sourced their Kane replacement in Solanke, and the Bayern forward has given his thoughts on the deal.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Kane said “It should be great. Dom is a great player, plays with high intensity, high speed. For sure he’s going to get chances in this team with the way that Ange plays.

“You saw that today with two top teams going at it toe-to-toe so I think it’s a really good signing.

“I saw him in the dressing room there and just wished him all the best and of course I hope that he has a good season.”

Dominic Solanke next season

After scoring 19 Premier League goals last season it felt inevitable that Solanke would get his move to a ‘Big Six’ club.

Spurs were crying out for an out-and-out centre-forward and Solanke ticks all their boxes. With a big price tag comes big pressure and now Solanke must show that he can consistently hit the numbers he achieved last season.

But with Postecoglou’s gung-ho style of play, there will be no lack of opportunities and chances for Solanke next season.

He will have his first chance to open his goalscoring account for Spurs next Monday when they open their season against Leicester City.
