The audience for this will be dead of Rona by the time this gets to theaters.

Man of La Mancha is more in need of a worthwhile screen adaptation.

Yet another remake no one asked for, and that no one wants.
Are the writers all brain dead?
by Anonymous | reply 2 | May 28, 2020 6:45 PM |
Good Lord, NO ONE will see this.
I liked the Jewison version personally, but 1971 was a very different time. Musicals aren't nearly in "demand" now, and even the more successful ones are very different in tone (Moulin Rouge, Chicago, The Greatest Showman). They are bursting with crazy energy, have a cut every 30 seconds, etc.
Fiddler on the Roof won't translate to that.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | May 28, 2020 7:01 PM |
It's been a while since FIDDLER ON THE ROOF played live in the U.S. There hasn't been a live theater version of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF since the most recent production ran on West 42nd Street in Manhattan from February 2019 through December 2019.

The recent off-Broadway Yiddish Fiddler was fantastic.

R5. Yes, if they are going to remake it, they should do it in Yiddish--that was a great production.

The three daughters will be played by trans women of color.

Jake Gyllenhaal is jewish right
by Anonymous | reply 9 | May 28, 2020 7:22 PM |
Come to think of it, it's probably time we started to think about remaking LITTLE WOMEN, SPIDERMAN, KING KONG and GYPSY
by Anonymous | reply 10 | May 28, 2020 7:22 PM |
Remake Cats.
Actually, don't. I wouldn't mind seeing a better A Chorus Line adaptation though.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | May 28, 2020 7:54 PM |
Ryan Murphy is already adapting A Chorus Line as a miniseries for Netflix.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | May 28, 2020 8:00 PM |
Those beautiful songs sung by some Valley girl in a sickly sweet trilling voice.
Yenta will be played by Viola Davis and Hodel will be a lesbian.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | May 28, 2020 8:02 PM |
I'm sure Meryl could handle Tevye.

Yes Jake Gyllenhaal is Jewish, so are Lenny Kravitz, SLASH, Scarlett Johannsen, Adam, Levine, Gene Simmons, DRAKE, and Zoe Kravitz. They can create an updated rock hip-hop opera fiddler.

MGM has to be some kind of money laundering scheme. All they do is reboot titles from their catalog. and almost all of them bomb.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | May 28, 2020 8:13 PM |
and guaranteed to have anachronistic dialogue, cringeworthy, I'm certain
by Anonymous | reply 18 | May 28, 2020 8:13 PM |
A mini-series of A Chorus Line?! RYAN MURPHY?!?!
What has God done to us?
by Anonymous | reply 19 | May 28, 2020 8:16 PM |
Gyllenhaal's father, who was raised as a Swedenborgian, is of Swedish and English descent and is a descendant of the Swedish noble Gyllenhaal family. Jake is half Jewish.

I just don't see a need to do a Fiddler remake. The original film is an excellent adaptation of the stage musical -reasonably sung and with the score almost intact. The acting was great and the visuals suitably depressing. I don't know what new things a remake could bring to the story. Conversely, I'm quite anxious to see the new film of West Side Story, because I've never found it satisfactory, except as a soundtrack album. I hate the cheesy light tricks and the stilted acting from most of the leads -who were much too old for their characters. Film musical that were outright rotten -like A Chorus Line -should get a remake over a success like Fiddler.

This new film will be set in NYC where Hasidic Jews will be driven out of town by the police for violating the social distancing order. Instead of singing " Anatevka," they will sing about " Borough Park."

Actually, [R29], I wouldn't mind a Show Boat remake at all -IF it were totally in your face and not flinching from the racism of the period. I don't know that movie audiences would go for the classical vocal technique needed for some of the score, but I've always wanted a Show Boat that told the story more from the black characters' points of view. Restore the song "Mis'ry's Comin' Aroun'" and cast Queen Latifah and I'm there!

A deconstructed Showboat is a good idea but would probably work better on Broadway than on film.

Barbra would be great as Yente. She even has a song (The Rumor) that wasn't used in the original film.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | May 29, 2020 9:28 PM |
Barbra would be great as the milk cart.

I would love a new film of "Showboat", but it would have to go a long way to beat the 1936 James Whale Universal version which is superb entertainment.
Norm Lewis could play Joe and sing "Old Man River"! Ultimately the only person allowed to play Queenie will be Viola Davis who will give many interviews about the importance of her being black and having a career in film for which she must still struggle every day. Although people will eat it up, "Queenie's Ballyhoo" will ultimately not be restored to the score.
Mike Myers will make a comeback as a wonderful Cap'n Andy, and Streep will play Parthy...like Streep.
