Metal Gear is a long-running Konami series of action-adventure games that put a strong emphasis on stealth. Generally speaking, the Metal Gear games are focused on special forces operatives who will come upon one of the bipedal tanks called “Metal Gears” at some point on their missions, but there have been exceptions as well. For example, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance was focused on a ex-special forces operative turned mercenary cyborg fighting other mercenary cyborgs. What Is the Value of the Metal Gear Franchise?
For those who are curious, the Metal Gear series started up with Metal Gear in 1987 before following up on it with Metal Gear 2 in 1990. Later, the series moved on with Metal Gear Solid, which in turn, led to a total of five main installments as well as a number of spin-offs. The last example was Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, which came out in 2015.
Chronically, the Metal Gear series is something of a mess. Unfortunately, the Metal Gear series has run into some serious issues in recent times. In short, there was a serious falling-out between Konami and the series creator Hideo Kojima during the making of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Exactly what happened is unknown, which hasn’t been helped by unconfirmed rumors such as how Kojima was barred from picking up the win for Best Action Game at the 2015 Game Awards by Konami. However, whatever happened, it is clear that the two parties have parted ways, which has resulted in a fair amount of anger from the Metal Gear fan base directed at Konami. Combined with the fact that Metal Gear Survive was nowhere near the success that Konami presumably wanted, the future of the Metal Gear series is rather uncertain at the moment.
Still, this isn’t to say that the Metal Gear series has no remaining power to it. For example, there is a Metal Gear movie being worked upon at the moment, though it remains to be seen whether this particular attempt will beat its predecessors by actually getting filmed. Likewise, there is still a lot of Metal Gear merchandise being made, which is without counting potential Metal Gear games that could still be made in the future. Due to this, it is safe to say that the Metal Gear is still a multi-million series in spite of the recent hits that it has taken.
