Jack Rodwell is yet to show he is worth the £10 million that Sunderland paid for his services, but he did find the net on his return to the starting 11 against former side Manchester City.

The 23-year-old was left out of the squad to face Aston Villa last weekend and hasn’t had the easiest of starts to life at Sunderland.

But Rodwell responded in the best possible fashion when he stepped in for the injured Lee Cattermole and scored in a 3-2 defeat against Man City.

With dissenting voices starting to grow in volume prior to his goal, Rodwell was asked whether he felt under pressure before lining up against City.

“No, not really, he is quoted as saying by the Chronicle.

“The manager just said to me, make sure I can pick you. You want to do well every game, so I don’t think I had anything to prove.

“I think prior to these last few games, I felt I was coming up to fitness, and then a bit of sickness kept me out of the team. I want to show why the club invested in me.”

Despite Rodwell’s goal, Sunderland couldn’t pick up a point and the midfielder was unable to revel in his personal achievement.

“Obviously coming back to Man City and scoring is good on a personal level, but we wanted to get some points on the board,” he said.

“We went two goals down and I suppose you can say we showed some character to come back. But we didn’t get the points. It is frustrating, but defensively it’s always going to be tough there.

“In the first half, I thought we were poor on the ball, but in the second half we came out a little bit better.”
