Who doesnt love a musical with a few murders? Obviously, lots of people do because Chicago is one of the most popular musicals of all time. Its still on Broadway after all these years. And while not every musical turned into a movie actually ends up being good, 2002s Chicago did not disappoint.

Who doesn’t love a musical with a few murders? Obviously, lots of people do because Chicago is one of the most popular musicals of all time. It’s still on Broadway after all these years. And while not every musical turned into a movie actually ends up being good, 2002’s Chicago did not disappoint.

The Oscar-winning film stars Renee Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Queen Latifah, Richard Gere, Dominic West, and John C. Reilly. It ended up winning six Oscars including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress for Catherine Zeta-Jones’s portrayal as Velma Kelly.

But is one of the most popular movie musicals available to stream on Netflix? Unfortunately, it’s not. It is available on Hulu and on the Starz channel on Amazon Prime, but not on Netflix.

There are many reasons Chicago is so memorable but one of the main ones is the “Cell Block Tango”. Six women who have murdered their lovers or husbands talk and sing about why they don’t deserve to be punished for their crimes. Why the men “had it coming.”

Chances are if someone got their comeuppance on Twitter, you’ve seen the “they had it coming” gif used once or twice.

But beyond the “Cell Block Tango”, Chicago is filled with a ton of amazing songs including “All That Jazz”, “Roxie”, “Nowadays”, “We Both Reached For The Gun”, and “Razzle Dazzle”. Not only do Zellweger and Zeta-Jones show they have the voices to carry these big, bold songs, but they also portray their characters perfectly.

Velma Kelly and Roxie Hart (played by Zellweger) are enemies turned reluctant allies when they find out they can play the press into making them famous for murdering their husbands with a little help from their lawyer, Billy Flynn (played by Richard Gere).

What they unfortunately learn is that the press and the public only have the attention span for one murderess at a time. When one steals the spotlight, the other is ignored in prison. But Velma and Roxie are nothing if not cunning and use their fame to get free and become what they’ve always wanted: famous.

While it’s unfortunate Chicago isn’t available to stream on Netflix, it’s definitely worth a watch if you haven’t seen it.
