The Koodathayi murder case, chronicled in the Netflix documentary “Curry And Cyanide,” unfolds a chilling narrative of familial betrayal and calculated murders that shocked the tranquil village of Koodathayi in the Kozhikode district of Kerala.

Is Jolly Joseph alive or dead, case verdict and where is she now today as Curry and Cyanide releases on Netflix

Jolly is yet to be proven guilty by the court, but from the evidence provided by the police, it is deduced that Annamma was her first victim.

In 2019, Jolly was arrested at the Ponnamattam house and Curry and Cyanide ends with Jolly behind bars and Renji accepting Jolly’s two sons into her family. While she was in police custody, Jolly admitted to the accusations, but her confessions will not come in handy in court as there are multiple loopholes in the case.

Her defense advocate, B. A. Aloor, states with confidence that Jolly will not be convicted in court based on the reports and allegations presented and on March 6, 2023, the Koodathayi murder case trials began at a special court in Kozhikode, Kerala. It is still an ongoing case.

51 year old Jolly is alive and still in prison but she had attempted to commit suicide by biting into her arms.

Curry And Cyanide marked its release on 22 December 2023 on Netflix.

“Curry And Cyanide” plot and characters

The Curry and Cyanide documentary takes us through the twisted events that transpired within the Ponnamattam house, where Jolly’s aspirations clashed with the expectations of her influential in-laws. Born into a farming family, Jolly desired a lavish lifestyle that her marriage to Roy Thomas initially promised. However, as the family matriarch, Annamma, passed away, Jolly’s life took a sinister turn.

Jolly’s calculated moves included forging academic qualifications to gain acceptance into the respected Thomas family. Her quest for societal respect pushed her to acquire cyanide, a substance nearly impossible to legally obtain in Kerala. Through a connection with M.S. Mathew, a gold jewelry salesman, Jolly secured the deadly substance, setting the stage for a series of murders.

The first victim, Annamma, was followed by the mysterious death of Roy in 2011. Jolly’s attempt to legitimize her claim to the ancestral house using false documents triggered suspicion from her siblings, Renji and Rojo. The siblings uncovered inconsistencies, leading to doubts about Roy’s alleged suicide. The unraveling of these events highlighted the negligence in investigations, with potential signs of cyanide poisoning overlooked.

Matthew Manchadiyil’s discovery of Jolly’s affair marked another turning point, leading to his own alleged cyanide-related death. Jolly’s relentless pursuit of a life of comfort led her to Shaju Zacharias, Roy’s first cousin, and triggered a series of deaths within his family. Suspicious deaths, refusals of postmortems, and the degradation of Sili Sebastian’s mental health painted a grim picture. Jolly’s marriage to Shaju, following the deaths of Sili and her daughter Alphine, raised eyebrows, and Renji’s growing doubts fueled her investigation.

Renji’s meticulous examination of Roy’s postmortem reports revealed discrepancies, sparking the involvement of K. G. Simon and the initiation of a more thorough investigation. Exhumation of victims’ remains and public attention ensued, leading to Jolly’s arrest in 2019. However, her confessions in police custody face challenges in court due to the late conduct of postmortems and inconclusive reports.

The documentary sheds light on the complexities of familial trust, with Renji acknowledging the difficulty of doubting a family member. Even when confronted in prison, Jolly allegedly confessed without a hint of guilt. Renji’s family now cares for Jolly’s two sons, as her elder son, Remo, refuses to acknowledge her as his mother.

Jolly’s current state is one of incarceration, and her attempt to commit suicide suggests possible remorse. The ongoing trials, which began in March 2023, present a legal challenge. Jolly’s defense, led by B. A. Aloor, expresses confidence that the evidence and allegations may not lead to a conviction.
