James Forrest has told The Telegraph that Celtic can dole out an even heavier defeat to Rangers than the 5-1 mauling which Brendan Rodgers’s side inflicted on them last season.

Both Scottish giants renew hostilities at Ibrox on Saturday for what will be the first Old Firm derby of the season.

Celtic go into the clash after winning five of the six meetings between the sides last season – including two 5-1 victories, the last of which came at Ibrox.

That being said, Rangers boss Pedro Caixinha has overhauled the Gers’ squad and signed some real quality – including Bruno Alves, Graham Dorrans and Alfredo Morelos – and they look a stronger outfit this time around than they were under Mark Warburton last term.

“Yes,” he told The Telegraph when asked if Celtic could improve on that 5-1 scoreline. “That is what it is all about. It is about getting better and doing even more.

“The record we had against them last season gives us confidence. They have made some signings and we know it will be tough. We will be up against new faces so we need to make sure we are right at it.”

The local derbies should, in theory, be a lot closer this season.
