Maximiliano Meza is set to join River Plate from Monterrey on Tuesday. After a week of waiting and uncertainty, the 31-year-old midfielder will be moving to Marcelo Gallardo’s team.

Martín Demichelis, former River Plate coach until only a week ago and now the brand new Monterrey coach, tried to convince Meza to stay with “Rayados.” According to journalist César Luis Merlo, the former Independiente player had a conversation with Demichelis on Sunday and informed him that, due to personal reasons, he wanted to play in Argentina.

The 2018 Argentine World Cup player will join a long list of River Plate players in the current squad who have either played for the senior national team or the youth national team: Franco Armani, Jeremías Ledesma, Germán Pezzella, Ramiro Funes Mori, Manuel Lanzini, Franco Mastantuono, Claudio Echeverri, and Pablo Solari.

With this mix of experienced players, young talents with huge potential, and the return of coach Marcelo Gallardo, River Plate will aim to lift the Copa Libertadores this season.
