We’re edging to the halfway point in January and Newcastle United are yet to make a signing in the current transfer window.

Meanwhile, the Premier League club remains in Mike Ashley’s hands despite speculation about an alleged takeover by a consortium led by Peter Kenyon.

As a result, some Magpies fans are getting somewhat restless, and given how previous years have yielded similar speculation which ultimately never amounted to anything, you can’t really blame them.

On the pitch, Newcastle’s form remains mediocre, as despite Rafael Benitez’s best efforts, the current squad simply looks just too short of quality to be comfortable in the top flight, hence their 15th place in the table, two points above the bottom three.

The Tynesiders travel to Chelsea on Saturday and, as part of the pre-match build-up, Newcastle’s official Twitter account shared a video of the players in training, but it hasn’t gone down too well among some of the Toon Army faithful.

Here is how some Newcastle fans reacted on Twitter, with certain comments criticising the club’s lack of ambition, the stalemate in transfer and takeover talks, and whether they will be able to even compete against the Blues:

That’s a coincidence. We’ve been confirming our strategy for 31st January.

“Hello. Is that the #NUFC Box Office? Great. No transfers and no takeover? I’d like to cancel my season ticket please”
