I did a site search, but nothing came up. I saw "Monster" last night for the first time. I know, I'm very late to the party. Charlize was ferocious as Aileen and most likely deserved her Academy Award. My question is about one of the last guys she picks up on the highway. The fat, odd-looking guy with the stutter. She was about to kill him until she saw that he was a misfit. Then she gives him a hand job out of pity (although she did take money out of his wallet). She didn't kill him, too, right? It seemed like she was going to let him go after she serviced him, but the movie didn't make it clear. The viewer didn't see all of the guys she killed, so it was kind of hazy at the end as far as who she did or did not kill. TIA!

I say "most likely deserved her Academy Award" because I forget who else was up for it that year. It was a truly impressive performance, though, so I imagine she was the best of the nominees. Was she wearing a mask to look like Aileen?

Yes, irl she did, OP. He was her last victim.

She was very much portrayed as a sympathetic character and you can go on YouTube and see all the man-haters praising her and actually believe what she was saying in prison when she had gone crazy.

I do believe that it is very possible that her first victim tried to take her because he had a history of SA. However, that in no way changes the fact that she was a stone cold killer who never should have been released from prison had she not received the death penalty.

It's a really great performance, and she very much deserved her Academy Award--it might be the most deserved Best Actress award on the last 25 years (or is at least tied with Cate Blanchett's). Theron never gave a performance again quite like it, though I'm dubious if she ever got a part anywhere near as good.

R5 - “Take” is actually a more subtle and poetical way to reference Rape; kinda like “he knew her” = they had sex.

I may be wrong, but it seemed like the nice guy with the family who offered to take her home and get her cleaned up was the last one she killed, at least in the film, R2. I have to say that the film certainly did make the audience sympathetic to her plight.

Watch her in Young Adult. She should have been nominated for that (and won a second).

The wikipedia entry says she does spare a guy in the movie who says he had never slept with a prostitute before, so is that the same guy? It has been several years since I've seen the film.

It would make sense that Wuornos didn't kill EVERY guy, because the murders happened over a 12 month period. As she was a prostitute I imagine she would've picked up some work during that year where she didn't kill the john.

Theron's mother killed Theron's father, who was allegedly abusive. Mother never served time as the killing was deemed self-defense. So, yes, the movie was a sympathetic portrayal of Wuornos.

OP, I don't remember that scene. I'm sorry.

I have mixed feelings about Wuornos. She lived with her grandparents, grandfather molested her & impregnated her. She lived like a homeless person from an early age. I used to wonder why kids "run away from home" so much and I'm convinced now that it's because of sexual activities within families.

I also believe she was raped, otherwise brutalized by tricks. I think her first murder probably was self-defense. But she got a taste of blood and couldn't stop killing.

Yes, that's the same guy. Thanks for the answer!

I feel bad for Aileen. Her childhood was a hell and her adult life wasn’t much better she never had a chance. She didn’t have to kill anybody but obviously the nightmare of a life she had combined with whatever mental problems she was born with made her the way she was.

I didn't like Christina Ricci as the girlfriend. She was so boring in the movie. Maybe she was supposed to be boring, but it wasn't great to watch.

by Anonymousreply 14March 6, 2022 6:16 PM

R13- So do I. In fact she is the only serial killer that I have ever had any sympathy for. Her childhood was horrendous, just heartbreaking. That doesn't mean I excuse murder, just that can feel sympathy for the child she once was. I also think she was legally insane when they executed her and they should have allowed her to serve life without parole.

I thought Ricci was scarier than Theron. She played it almost like a bitch baby dyke version Lady Macbeth.

by Anonymousreply 16March 6, 2022 6:18 PM

Tyra should be in prison, IMHO. I will never believe that treacherous bitch was unaware that AW was killing those men.

I fucking love this movie and I love Ricci in it. As dark as it is, it actually has some funny moments ("The bar is closed," "Take the phone!")
