I think I remember way back when, Richard going on Letterman and claiming he would at times disguise himself as "butch" (well, butch for him) and wear a beard, deepen his voice, etc. Just for kicks.

The poor thing may have tried to 'transition' and then decided it wasn't for him, and started taking testosterone to off set all the woman hormones. And the pendulum has swung too far and he's now got a bushy beard and perhaps some muscles.
