A new Taiwanese commercial for McDonald’s featuring a gay son coming out to his dad has gone viral.
As of this posting, the video has racked up over 1.1 million views since being uploaded on the company’s YouTube page on March 4.
McDonalds brands itself as McCafé in Taiwan.
Meanwhile, AdWeek reports that the ad has been stirring up some anti-LGBT religious ire in Taiwan:
The Alliance of Taiwan Religious Groups for the Protection of Family is leading the incitement to boycott. “Even if you want to just take a leak at a McDonald’s bathroom, you can’t help but feel polluted,” a rep from the Alliance told local media. (What an odd thing to say to the press.) The rep also accused McDonald’s of “openly promoting gay issues” and miseducating children on sexual behavior.

I seriously doubt this. They may use McCafe for some kind of standalone coffee places, but I'm pretty sure they use the full McDonald's name EVERYWHERE for their restaurants.

Wow, that commercial is more emotional than I thought. I have a small tear in my eye.
Thanks for posting this OP

Isn't Taiwan governed by China? Maybe not, I'm not clear on that. If so, this commercial is technically illegal according to this other DL thread:

No r4 Taiwan is not governed by China that's Hong Kong but China still considers Taiwan to be part of China while Taiwan considers itself to be independent nation separate from China.

Nice sentiment, but a bit patronizing and twee for my taste. Then again, I can't say I know anything about culture or the acceptance of gays and lesbians in Taiwan, so hopefully this helps with where ever they are in their national process of acceptance.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | March 10, 2016 3:17 PM |
Of course it's the religious Christian group protesting. Taiwan is an athetist country so they have no problem with gays. But the missionaries are converting people and those newly Christain people have problems with the gays.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | March 10, 2016 4:52 PM |
R11, it's not just Christian countries who persecute gays and lesbians. Christ. How stupid are you? Ever heard of Iran? China? Myanmar? Cambodia?
by Anonymous | reply 12 | March 10, 2016 4:56 PM |
China is an atheist country. They don't care if you're gay.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | March 10, 2016 4:58 PM |
R12, what does your point have to do with the issue at hand? The issue here is that Christian groups are protesting a McDonald's commercial that the rest of the country has no problem with.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | March 10, 2016 5:00 PM |
Religious groups are very upset over this McDonalds commercial.

Really, R13? Perhaps you should let them know.. Right after you read this most recent story about how much they "don't care if you're gay". (I'm seriously amazed you can even read.)

"I'm the end of the line, the end of the family line." That's more devastating than just going against the Bible (Taiwan has a mix of folk, Buddhist etc traditions anyway, everything revolves around fertility) . Any set up that's not part of the status quo has an extremely hard time breaking into the club. And straights always need someone beneath them to feel superior. Great acting, and directing of tones. It's not patronizing at all cos the forbidding patriarch IS the word of God there. The latte being the site of acceptance is uhm... Lol

The son is seriously hot. Anyone know the actor's name. WOW!

R16, both of you are talking about the PRC. Taiwan is ROC. Two VERY different animals.

If only the commercial, titled "Acceptance," were met with such tolerance. It's brewing up protests from Taiwan's religious community, AdWeek reported.
The Alliance of Taiwan Religious Groups for the Protection of Family is attempting to launch a boycott.
"Even if you want to just take a leak at a McDonald's bathroom, you can't help but feel polluted," an Alliance spokesperson told Taiwanese outlets, per AdWeek.
According to Shanghaiist, the group issued a statement that reads: "Because McDonald's is frequented by many children, it is especially important to oppose the promotion of same-sex behavior." The alliance also added that it "opposes all advertising that miseducates children on sexual behavior" and "rebukes and boycotts all enterprises that are polluting the next generation."
The Huffington Post reached out to McDonald's for comment but a response was not immediately received.

Taiwan is majority Buddhist and Buddhists tend to be tolerant and accepting.
Christians are a small minority in Taiwan and can be safely ignored.

Sorry-- I don't get it. What does that mean on the cup... The sentence didnt make sense! Can some explain?
by Anonymous | reply 33 | March 11, 2016 8:16 AM |
R33, the boy wrote "I like boys" on the cup because he was afraid to say it out loud. His Dad wrote "I accept that you..." Put the two fragments together.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | March 11, 2016 8:38 AM |
As one who has for the last ten years lived in Taiwan I can say that unless you are their son or daughter most Taiwanese people don't give a rat's ass whether you are gay or not. Producing grandchildren is a duty that is not to be taken lightly. That is why the commercial showing the son and father is particularly poignant. Over the past few years there has been an aggressive anti-gay campaign led and financed by the same hate groups that fight gay rights in the United States. Those are the same hate groups that stir up anti-gay campaigns in Africa as well. The most recent Taiwan election resulted in the DPP (Democratic Progressive Party) winning both the presidency and the legislature. The DPP has long advocated for LGBT rights. We will see if they put their money where their mouth has been. I doubt it.

I hardly consider being in a McDonald's commercial being a public figure. Does the girl in the I have a brain commercial put public figure in her facebook too?
by Anonymous | reply 39 | March 12, 2016 8:08 AM |
I thought the dad was going to write the word "too" on the cup.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | March 12, 2016 8:37 AM |
The dad wrote "Accept that you." Is he telling the son that the son should accept himself?
Or is he saying "I accept that you"? One missing word makes all the difference.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | March 12, 2016 8:52 AM |
And to the poster who said isn't Taiwan just China - it certainly isn't. Even to the point that if China that still considers Taiwan part of the whole moves to annex it - there is treaty obligation with the United States to help defend Taiwan.
So in essence Taiwan is a sovereign state with the full faith and credit of recognition by the United Nations and the United States.

The son says that he likes boys and the father is saying that he accepts his son likes boys.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | March 12, 2016 2:07 PM |
No, that's not what happened, R47. The Dad wrote "Accept THAT you" which means he's telling the son that he needs to love himself. The son needs to accept the gay part of himself and love himself.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | March 12, 2016 2:37 PM |
The boy wrote: '我喜歡男生' [I like boys'].
The father added: '我 ^接受你^ 喜歡男生' [I ^accept that you^ like boys'].
So the most straightforward interpretation will be: The father accepts the fact that his son likes boys, i.e. that his son is gay.

Didn't McDonald's pull a similar thing in France with an ad featuring a gay son and his dad (although he didn't come out)? Meh.
And future reunification with China is part of the Kuomintang's platform, not to mention Taiwan's status as a truly sovereign and independent state is shaky considering they have never declared independence.

So torn here!
Kinda meh at a heinous corporation using a really difficult issue in every glbti persons' life - coming out to one's parents/family as sentimental, heart-wrenching fodder to sell their shitty burgers - or coffee - or whatever...
But then part of me appreciates that visibility is still so important - especially visibility that's positive and helpful...
And anything that gets the hateful Christians' panties in a twist - has to be a good thing - right?
