The Contestant Who Knew Too Much

Finally got around to watching this on Netflix last night. The subject, Theodore, is gay (eventhough he wanted to kiss Holly Hallestrom) and quite cute when he was younger. He was the guy in the audience always helping contestants with correct prize amounts and such.

He was the guy in the audience always helping contestants with correct prize amounts and such.

He ended up helping this young hottie, Brandon, win 2 cars, a computer, etc... but the shit hit the fan years later when he inadvertently helped an older gentleman hit the Showcase amount right on the dot and panic ensued.

Thank you, OP! I watched this as an antidote to an episode of Gacy.

Did you notice how much more joyful the Bob Barker incarnation seemed to be than the Drew Carey version? In Bob's years, Theodore's yelling of the prices out to contestants was turned into a running joke for the episode.

Drew and his team all freaked out and panicked that they were being fucked over by fans of Bob's longtime producer, who had recently left Drew's version of the show after only 1 year (did I sense tension?) Drew says, "I thought I had lost my job!" when the guy Theo had helped ended up guessing his showcase to the exact dollar. Drew remarks something like "You can memorize prices all you want and come here and try that but that's not going to happen again," as opposed to Bob's more "watch and learn to win!" attitude.

ALSO, WHET young, lucky hottie Brandon. I need more.

The show was far more joyful with Barker who had a quick wit and could turn any line or situation into a humorous joke.

I like how the producer got his job by writing his thesis on game shows and the tenacity of driving hours on end to visit Goodson for interviews. His love for the genre won him his life's work. I suppose times were less cynical back then.

Holly was always my favorite Barker Beauty, too and it was nice to hear how kind and accommodating she was to Theo. Models would never kiss a contestant these days.

Bob was an old-school host and knew how to sell the games, build suspense, and make the contestants shine. Drew has never respected the game or game play. To him, TPIR is that corny show you watch when you're home sick in bed. The fans Bob used to refer to as "loyal friends and true" who loved the show, paid attention to the prices, and applied strategy and critical thinking to the games, are big freaks in Drew's eyes. It's a testament to the strength of the format that it has continued to thrive under Drew's contempt for it.
