so Medvedev won the Paris masters over scandal-plagued Zverev 5-7 6-4 6-1 for his first title of the year, now the 2 are tied with 3 masters each
This week we have a men's event in Sofia but no hometown hero Dimitrov and the ladies are in Linz without defending champ Gauff.

shocking to see Cilic get destroyed by Jonas Forejtek (who?)
by Anonymous | reply 4 | November 10, 2020 5:52 AM |
With Forejtek win i just watched some number who show how ahead Felix and Sinner are from their peers.
Wins on an atp main draw from players born in 2000 and under
2000
FAA (62) Wild (7) Molleker (4) Korda (3) Gaston (3) Kuhn (2)
2001
Sinner (25) Nakashima (3) Forejtek (1)
2002
Musetti (5)
2003
Alcaraz (1)
Wild is probably the strangest case because he won a title (the only one of the bunch who won one) but he is not even top 100
by Anonymous | reply 5 | November 10, 2020 7:28 PM |
R4 Forejtek was a former junior number one, he won the US Open junior last year.
A lot of potential but pretty awful year till this victory. With this win he jumps to number 355 in the ranking
by Anonymous | reply 6 | November 10, 2020 7:29 PM |
Do you refer to Wild Card?
by Anonymous | reply 7 | November 10, 2020 7:40 PM |
No, to Thiago Seyboth Wild
by Anonymous | reply 8 | November 10, 2020 7:59 PM |
And Felix is on the verge of losing with Caruso.
This draw was supposed to be perfect for him winning his first title
by Anonymous | reply 10 | November 11, 2020 7:06 PM |
yikes the Sofia draw has completely fallen apart. At this point I'd expect the winner of de Minaur/Sinner to take the title.
FAA losing to Caruso is another headscratcher he must be tired after the last several weeks. His last 2 losses were quite poor
by Anonymous | reply 12 | November 11, 2020 8:55 PM |
It's not only that he lose to Caruso (who had a pretty good year) it's that he didn't even have the chance to win a set.
He needs to rest and start next season at the best possible level. He needs to win a tournament as soon as possible and reach at least quarterfinals on a GS to really believe in his chances

Novak Djokovic
Daniil Medvedev
Alexander Zverev
Diego Schwartzman
[bold]Group London[/bold]
Rafael Nadal
Dominic Thiem
Stefanos Tsitsipas
Andrey Rublev

I really want to see how improved Rublev is. I'd love to see him blast Nadal off the court
by Anonymous | reply 16 | November 12, 2020 5:40 PM |
Diego has very little chances no matter the group. This is not the type of surface he likes and the rest are better on indoor hardcourts.
Tsitsipas better bring last year level or he will lose a lot of points.
I think there are good chances that Nole and Rafa get eliminated before semifinals

[quote]why Tokyo?
I think the first year-end championships were held in Tokyo in 1970. So it's the 50th edition this year

Melzer/Roger Vasselin are the last double team to qualify for London Finals as they won their semifinal in Sofia. Even if they win the final, Murray/Skupski can't pass them now

by Anonymous | reply 27 | November 13, 2020 8:33 PM |
He'll be lucky if he makes semifinals.
If he wins against Rublev he has a big chance of making at least semifinals because i can't see Tsitsipas defeating him (unless he is in better form than in recent tournaments).
Of course his match against Rublev is difficult to predict, he crushed Andrey the only time they played but that was ages ago and Rublev is playing very well on indoor hardcourts.
Anyway he has more chances in his group than with Medvedev and Zverev

so far Rublev is still being 1 dimensional as ever, unable to deal with Nadal's heavy topspin. Just like last week he lost to Wawrinka. I would have thought playing Nadal indoors would have given him more of a chance
Nadal is playing well though
by Anonymous | reply 50 | November 15, 2020 8:53 PM |
It was only one break, but the truth is he had no break points and he only put pressure in one of Nadal's serves

If he is not able to cause trouble to Rafa on this surface there's no hope for him against Nadal

It looks like Djokovic and Pospisil are now asking to be reinstated/reelected onto the ATP Players' Council. If true, this means that their attempt to form an alternative players' union has failed, and if it has failed there are probably only two possible reasons:
1) players aren't interested in alternatives to the ATP
2) players don't trust Djokovic to organize/run an alternative structure to the ATP.
Either way, egg/face/Djokovic.

R113 Tsitsipas is not in good form, as simple as that. He spends too much time in social media instead of improving his fitness.
It happened the same against Nole in Roland Garros, it's not normal that you end exhausted when your rivel (which is more than ten years older) is in way better shape at the end of the match.
I want new players winning big titles but most of then doesn't have the hunger that Rafa or Nole had when they were their age

at least he won finally
by Anonymous | reply 136 | November 21, 2020 6:04 PM |
Yeah, R136, Thiem seems to love to complicate things for himself. Think about the US Open when he played like shit for two sets. In the second set tiebreak today, Thiem blew those match points and couldn't get his serve in toward the end of the tiebreaker. Really frustrating to watch him do that.
I hope Medvedev can take out Nadal. What I'd really like to see, though, is two young guys battling it out in the Australian Open final and not one of the Big 3 winning it. But it's probably going to be one of the Big 3. It was pathetic the way all those bitches rolled over for Nadal at the French.
by Anonymous | reply 140 | November 21, 2020 7:11 PM |
R136 He was 4-0 in the last tie break, and he won. He won the last 5 tie breaks against Nadal.

Medvedev looks like a dispossessed Russian royal of the early 20th century with bad hygiene.
by Anonymous | reply 180 | November 22, 2020 8:56 PM |
R180, that’s the thing: Medvedev is, at least, very distinctive. I’ve been watching Thiem for years now and I have no idea who he is. He doesn’t seem have a personality that comes across on court.
by Anonymous | reply 182 | November 22, 2020 9:03 PM |
I'll take Thiem's bland personality over Medvedev's abrasive, abusive one any day.
by Anonymous | reply 184 | November 22, 2020 9:06 PM |
R182 Curiously he seems to be one of the most liked players and it's not like Nadal or Federer have big personalities. Thiem has a big game and that should be enough
by Anonymous | reply 185 | November 22, 2020 9:09 PM |
I thought that Thiem was going to win it.....but crazy Medvedev won. I do not like him but I think his tantrums are entertaining. I hope that one day we can have simultaneous subtitling of whatever he says during the match.
by Anonymous | reply 186 | November 22, 2020 9:25 PM |
Medvedev was able to withstand the barrage of Thiem's winners and capitalized on his errors in the second and third sets. He also somehow was more consistent than Djokovic and Nadal this week. Not my favorite style of play but he just defeated the top 3 players in 1 week. That's a good stat
don't like his personality either but I'm just glad it was not another Nadal vs. Djokovic borefest

R189 it is not only about match. It is about bein goat, djoko will get 18th slam or not, nadal will 21th being the best of all time or maybe fed will win being 40. Nobody cares about match like rublev/ tsitsipas
by Anonymous | reply 191 | November 22, 2020 10:51 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 194 | November 23, 2020 12:33 AM |
Fed will be lucky to get one more slam. Father time is undefeated. Especially to athletes over 40.
by Anonymous | reply 196 | November 23, 2020 2:23 AM |
I'd like to see Fed get lucky like Nadal has the last few years. So many Slam draws fell apart or players just handed the match to Nadal over and over. Fed should be at 21 but he totally blew it against Djokovic at Wimbledon in 2019.
Speaking of blowing it, Thiem is so frustrating to watch. He has the match in hand and then starts blowing it. He's admitted he gets tight. He needs to overcome that.
by Anonymous | reply 197 | November 23, 2020 3:35 PM |
Also, now that the AO is in question, I wonder how it will affect older players. If it had been a normal year, Novaxx could have easily won Wimbledon. Federer (injured) would have dropped to... 30? and would have had a far more difficult path to a GS. Covid worked well for him since it saved all his points from 2019. I think Covid will place some kind of invisible asterisks next to some players.
by Anonymous | reply 198 | November 23, 2020 4:25 PM |
I want to watch a GS without a big 3 and with all of them in the draw.
I want a reminiscent of late 90's wta with new players and the old ones fighting for GS.
And i want young new players making an impact next year, i want they put some pressure on the Tsitsipas, Zverev and company. Some of them think they'll win GS when the big 3 retires and i want some new players showing them they better rush to do it

Dinkins remembers his friend Arthur Ashe.
R198, without COVID-adjusted rankings for 2020 events and factoring in only those tournament that did get played, Federer's current rank would be #27. Raonic would be #9, PCB #10, Garin #12, Ruud #14, FAA #16, Coric #18, and Sinner #24. Berrettini would have plummeted from #10 to #31 and Fognini from #17 to #63. The rankings adjusted for COVID are logic free.

Two weeks of delay is not that much, but during a while they talked about playing in april, which means push all the clay season.
And i hope they play qualifications, because they were talking about skipping them (like they'll do with the junior tournament)

The dumbest thing about 2020 was the French Open happening 2 weeks after the US Open. The French hate Nadal, but their choice guaranteed Nadal another French Open. All his main competition was gassed from a grueling US Open. Way to go, stupid Frenchies!
by Anonymous | reply 213 | November 26, 2020 1:48 PM |
R213 Sorry but nothing of that is true.
First, french hated Nadal, now they simply recognize that he is the best player on their tournament by far. The times they cheered his opponents are long gone. Maybe if he plays against a french or Federer, but not against any other player.
Second, the conditions of this Roland Garros were clearly against Rafa. The time of the year, the roof, the lack of clay season. He was not even playing that well on Rome, so saying anything was made to guarantee another Nadal's win is ridiculous
by Anonymous | reply 214 | November 26, 2020 2:42 PM |
Sure, R214. Nadal not playing the US Open while his main rivals played and were tired had NOTHING to do with it. Uh huh. I have a lot of French friends who are tennis fans. They all say most French people hate Nadal while still respecting him. I'm the same way. I respect him, but it doesn't change that I can't stand him.
LOL to your saying the conditions at RG were against Nadal. Clay, no matter what time of year or lack of clay season, ALWAYS favors Nadal. And he played fine in Rome. Diego just played practically the match of his life. Nadal is the greatest on clay ever. He was always the favorite coming into that tournament. The fact that the US Open was played two weeks before and the only men who could take him down were gassed just raised those odds even higher and all but guaranteed another French for him. Also the fact that Djokovic did not show up with his A game in the final helped a lot.
This year, I'd love to see someone finally take it to Nadal at the French, even if he loses. So many just give up, like Djokovic did this year and has in the past.
by Anonymous | reply 215 | November 26, 2020 6:11 PM |
I have lived in Paris for 9 years and I have been many times to RG. At the beginning, the French hated Nadal because they wanted Federer to win...but now the French love Nadal. Go and check L'équipe or other French newspapers the day after Nadal wins.

R275, my predictions
Gramps Fed will retire after early losses at Wimbledon and the US Open
Granny Vee will be left off the Olympic team, Serena will kick up a fuss and threaten not to play, and then Vee will be added to the team. She'll lose in the first round and then finally retire.
Nadal will win yet another French Open sending the tennis fans into a coma caused by sheer boredom.
Osaka will return to number one and then go into freefall again for a while.
Kenin will stay Top 5 and make another major final but lose again. Barty will flop and drop out of the Top 10.
Gauff will lose and cry after every Grand Slam loss.
Djokovic will not win a single Slam. Nadal will win the US Open with yet another creampuff draw and a joke like Kevin Anderson or Kyle Edmund as a finals opponent.
Misery will retire and have an affair with Kevin Spacey.
Martina Navratilova will make a singles comeback and win a match. In her second match she'll lose to a MTF, say something snarky and get banned from future WTA events thanks to the woke lynch mobs of Twitter.
