There Is Virtually No Nakedness in Today's Gyms

I'm thinking about getting a gym membership for the first time since the pandemic and have tried out a few gyms with free passes this week (my original gym never reopened). I can report that there is almost no nakedness anywhere in the men's locker room. It's not just the infamous towel dance; barely anyone even seems to change clothes or take showers. They even wear their gym clothes into the sauna, come out of the sauna all sweaty and just go home like that. I showered before going home, but I think there were about two or three other people using the showers all week. Is this the new normal? (And no, I wasn't hanging around the locker room the whole time, so this is based only on when I was getting changed.)

by Anonymousreply 213March 21, 2024 11:33 AM

I blame cellphone cameras. No one wants to find out their naked ass is on some pron site.

by Anonymousreply 1July 8, 2023 12:08 AM

Agreed but once in a awhile I see some hoe bare assed but usually it's some old fuck doing it. BTW I'm an old fuck too and wouldn't subject anyone to my nakedness.

by Anonymousreply 5July 8, 2023 12:37 AM

Gotta love those American men with their towel dance.

by Anonymousreply 6July 8, 2023 12:39 AM

The most ridiculous example happened in by local gay bathhouse. I had just sucked off this guy before I left to go home. He also decided to go home and opened his locker which was three down from mine. Then, he does the towel dance, putting on his underwear under his towel. I had just had his cock in my mouth and he's shy?

by Anonymousreply 7July 8, 2023 12:48 AM

You should open your own gym and make it nude friendly and encourage nudity in various direct and indirect ways.

by Anonymousreply 8July 8, 2023 12:48 AM

COVID changed everything. No one wants to be in a confined public place where germs and bacteria are flying around in the sticky, humid air anymore.

Fuck that stupid virus.

by Anonymousreply 10January 6, 2024 2:59 PM

Not so in mine. Maybe surprisingly, because it's a college gym. These guys have no hesitancy to parade around starkers and I thought kids today were all prudes.

Not that I wanted to know, but I was surprised to see that one of the really, really cute IT guys is hung like a canary.

by Anonymousreply 11January 6, 2024 3:17 PM

"No one wants to find out their naked ass is on some pron site."

No one wants to find out their naked ass is on some pron site without being paid a substantial sum for said pics first.

Old saggy guys don't mind getting naked in the locker room.

FitnessSF in the Castro. Communal showers. Rampant nudity. Everybody gets along and nobody cares. Nudity is no big deal in SF in general.

R14 I remember back in the day when it was Market Street Gym. Open showers and a whirlpool spa that was the place to go for an under the bubbles hand job.

by Anonymousreply 17January 6, 2024 3:42 PM

I first noticed nakedness getting markedly less common at my (Southern California) gym about ten years ago. It dwindled to just about none at all by five years ago.

by Anonymousreply 18January 6, 2024 3:48 PM

If someone tallies up all the posts on this thread we might be able to create a "gym neckidity" map of the US for handy reference.

by Anonymousreply 19January 6, 2024 3:51 PM

It's a number of factors, OP

Body Image: For decade now, young men (and men in general) have had expectations from the media (quite apart from social media which has just accelerated the spread of this image) of the Calvin Klein model-type body.

You also have to figure in anxiety about the size of men's cocks. Cocks come in al different sizes. There's an expectation of men to be equipped like a mule. Or a guy is big and is embarrassed about it. So.. they don't want to put their junk on display.

Next is the presence of creeps with cell phones. Twenty years ago, the cops caught a guy who had left a strategically placed camera filming guys changing and showering in the locker room of the gym at the university where I teach. It's a real worry.

And for the past four decades, we've become more aware of sexual abuse and exploitation. That has affected men's attitudes towards nudity.

Also factor in lingering puritanical attitudes.

I cannot abide guys who come into the sauna or steam room in their gym clothes after a workout. It's unhygienic, especially post-pandemic. My gym has clearly visible signs telling men to shower beforehand. They don't, so I generally avoid the sauna or steam room.

It also boggles my mind when guys put a towel around their waists before stripping off their underwear or jocks, then go to take a shower and dry off with the towel that has been wrapped over their sweaty butts and junk.

My advice to them would be to strip down to your underwear, go to shower, and take off your underwear in the privacy of the shower. You maintain modesty and privacy.

I swim laps, and I wear a speedo. I have no problem my naked butt or junk, but I wear the speedo, if I use the steam room, and strip it off in the privacy of the shower.

by Anonymousreply 20January 6, 2024 3:52 PM

There was some comedian or maybe a tiktok about people being more comfortable being nude in a locker room the older they are.

I’ve never heard even a one guy in my entire life being concerned about pictures being taken with cell phone on the locker room r20

by Anonymousreply 23January 6, 2024 4:20 PM

Nor have I, R23, but it's a factor...an unspoken and probably unthinking result of cases where it has occurred.

by Anonymousreply 24January 6, 2024 4:35 PM

So you have made it up r24

Any other unspoken and unthinking stories that you want to tell?

by Anonymousreply 25January 6, 2024 4:48 PM

Look dude (R25), I am not going to get into an argument with you here.

My point is that it is a reaction to a culture that promotes certain body images, unease over one's own body, lingering puritanical attitudes, and real incidents of creeps filming or taking photos of men changing and changing in locker rooms. The effect is an action that is largely instinctive or reflexive.

by Anonymousreply 26January 6, 2024 4:59 PM

R14/R15, back in the old days when it was Market Street Gym, I was a member while in town for the summer. I was changing clothes next to a guy who was a casual acquaintance because we worked out at the same time daily. While changing, he was not covering his rather large cock, which had a Prince Albert. He said to me “do you like my new Prince Albert? It feels great to be fucked by one. Want me to fuck you with it?” He said it as casually as one might offer someone a cup of coffee or a ride home. (I declined his kind offer.). Ah, San Francisco.

by Anonymousreply 27January 6, 2024 5:00 PM

Admit that you are lying r26

by Anonymousreply 28January 6, 2024 5:03 PM

How's the situation in Europe? For example, I find it hard to believe that the Germans, with their well-known devotion to nudity, would stay permanently clothed in the gym locker room because they fear cell phones, dick comparison, or anything. Is this just a US phenomenon?

by Anonymousreply 29January 6, 2024 5:07 PM

R29 in Italy, the dagos put on short terry cloth robes to change their underwear in. Their uncut dicks are not on display. I and my friend caught a few glances when we stripped off and put around our waist to head into the showers.

by Anonymousreply 30January 6, 2024 5:14 PM

Judging from the comments I’ve seen elsewhere from young people, it’s old men who have been the problem. Young people are disgusted by the sight of old bodies and old penises being shaken in their face. As a result, young people cover up because they associate being nude in the locker room with being like those old men. Old men need to cover up and let nudity happen where it should, among the young.

I’m old and would never do something so not aesthetically pleasing as being nude.

by Anonymousreply 31January 6, 2024 5:15 PM

R27 The owner of Market Street Gym had a business relationship with the owner of The Nob Hill Theater, so the big porn stars of the '90s who were in town "dancing" at Nob Hill would get free passes to work out at the gym.

I saw lots of the big names of gay porn there - Joey Stefano, Joe Romero, Kris Lord, Tom Chase, Damien...

by Anonymousreply 32January 6, 2024 5:28 PM

R31, fifty years ago old guys were naked around young guys in the locker room without the young guys being so traumatized that they foreswore nudity. What changed?

by Anonymousreply 33January 6, 2024 5:44 PM

The old guys have become almost universally obese r33

No young guy will willingly subject their eyes to such a sight

Fat men should were moomoos when they are in a public place

by Anonymousreply 34January 6, 2024 5:50 PM

Young guys should learn how to spell.

by Anonymousreply 35January 6, 2024 5:52 PM

Elderly Mar-a-Lago club members, turn gentlemen callers, adore me in the sauna as teasers. hehe

by Anonymousreply 37January 6, 2024 6:04 PM
They even wear their gym clothes into the sauna, come out of the sauna all sweaty and just go home like that.

I see that on the street as well (you will never see my tired old ass in a gym). Exercising has for many years now become so performative. For example, I see men running shirtless, in traffic, while talking on the phone to signify just how fit they are. Nice to look at, sure.

I only use saunas/steamrooms if I'm staying at a nice hotel or resort. I towel up, but if if others are naked I will unwrap and sit on the towel. And I ain't anything special to look at.

by Anonymousreply 38January 7, 2024 8:00 AM

Men running shirtless is usually very hot, most are in excellent shape, tan, and masculine.

There is a sleazy sex club near me that I've gone to several times over the years. One of the reasons I no longer go is cameras, be they guys' cell phones, which are supposedly forbidden, or those installed by the owner or employees. I don't really use the lockers or showers in my Y much anymore except for the occasional swim. I don't do a towel dance but I certainly don't walk around or shave naked, which was once very acceptable and no one thought anything of it.

by Anonymousreply 39January 7, 2024 1:47 PM

Older men grew up in an era where being naked around other people sometime was normal and not a big deal.

Now the younger generation is incredibly self conscious about being naked. So as younger people take over it's definitely a cultural element that is dying off.

Anyone can't help but notice how things have changed.

by Anonymousreply 40January 7, 2024 2:03 PM

It’s weird: on one hand, young people are quick to share naked selfies.

Yet god forbid someone glimpses their dicks when they’re changing in the locker room.

by Anonymousreply 41January 7, 2024 2:11 PM

Here's a similar paradox: last summer at Boy Beach a young, fit guy near me kept his bathing suit on almost all the time lying on the beach, and when he did take it off he hedged himself around with coolers and backpacks and the like so his dick wasn't visible from either side. But later I passed him in the dunes fucking another guy in the ass. Selective prudery, I guess.

by Anonymousreply 42January 7, 2024 2:16 PM
[R31], fifty years ago old guys were naked around young guys in the locker room without the young guys being so traumatized that they foreswore nudity. What changed?

[italic]Fifty[/italic] years ago? Honey, think would it would be like if back in 1974 (which was fifty years ago) you were hearing some eldergay at the time complain that the culture had changed since 1924 and they didn't see why it should.

TIME MARCHES ON. Things change. Deal with it.

by Anonymousreply 43January 7, 2024 2:34 PM

R43, why do you assume my question was rhetorical?

by Anonymousreply 44January 7, 2024 2:40 PM

When I was in high school gym class, which was not co-ed, in the ‘70s, we all changed clothes together and took showers together. It got you to be unself-conscious. Today the guys are not used to being naked with each other.

by Anonymousreply 45January 7, 2024 2:44 PM

r44, because I thought you'd be intelligent enough to understand that in five decades practically everything in the culture has changed. If you're not posing it rhetorically, it's a futile question.

by Anonymousreply 46January 7, 2024 2:46 PM

I think r24 comments about body image are spot on. The expectations to have a great, muscled or very toned body have been increasing for some time and people get self conscious, i dont think it is necessarily a prude thing , though this is also included at times.

In my old gymn the ones parading around naked were the ones with spectacular bodies or the older ones, who didn’t care.

I never saw or heard until now of anyone going into a sauna or steam room with they clothes on, even gym clothes. WTF!

by Anonymousreply 47January 7, 2024 2:47 PM

You go to the gym to work out. If you want to see naked men, there's the internet.

by Anonymousreply 48January 7, 2024 2:48 PM

I haven't been the sports facilities in Germany for some time. One hopes they are all still nudist paradises.

I remember the gang showers at beach "bath houses" all along the New England and Mid-Atlantic sea coast. I presume these are all ancient history.

My universities were all gang shower paradises.

Up until the 90s all men were naked at some point going to and from communal showers in saunas and steam rooms and nobody thought anything about it. Now there are no more communal showers and there are signs up outside saunas and steam rooms that say you must wear a towel. One said in order not to offend anyone! But men who claim they are women can walk around in front of girls with their dick and balls on display. Women complain and are told we don't discriminate! Yet men can't be naked in a sauna or steam room in a men's locker room! People today are so fucked up.

Because I'm old in a locker room I have no problem changing or going to and from the showers naked. Nobody gives a fuck and nobody has a desire to look or pull out their camera.

by Anonymousreply 50January 7, 2024 2:58 PM

Well, R46, most of us on this thread are curious enough to try to pinpoint what those changes are and offer possible explanations. You're free to skip the thread if you think curiosity is futile and it's just a matter of time marching inexplicably on.

by Anonymousreply 51January 7, 2024 3:03 PM

Why oh why are Americans so freaked out by nakedness? Old, young, ripped, flabby, dark, light, big dick/little dick (cell phones,OMG the horror)- really!

Y’all need to spend a little time in European spas and South American beaches to see that life in all its variety covered and uncovered physically is no big whoop.

In the NYC Equinox gyms- yeah there are the towel dancers. But my experience is that most (men) and probably women, who are comfortable in their own skin don’t give a minute’s notice to nakedness when dressing and showering in public gyms etc. I sure don’t.

by Anonymousreply 52January 7, 2024 3:04 PM

Good you don’t need to goon at the gym. Go home to do it!

by Anonymousreply 53January 7, 2024 3:05 PM

That's the thing r45, nudity is now more sexualized. People only associate taking off their clothes and being naked in front of people with having sex, whereas in the past it was normal part of school that you would all be naked at some point in gym class.

by Anonymousreply 54January 7, 2024 3:11 PM

This really is a generational thing. I'm going to assume that the dividing line is somewhere in GenX where nudity is okay or not. I just don't understand the people who get angry about it.

by Anonymousreply 55January 7, 2024 3:14 PM

R15 We used to call it the Jizzcusi.

by Anonymousreply 56January 7, 2024 3:24 PM

R55 hot guys get annoyed at fat ugly guys leering at them in the locker room and the gym showers. Especially when the fat uglies don’t work out…their entire purpose is to lurk in the locker and perv on the gym bros.

Hot guys show their dicks to other hot guys all the time.

I’d pay hundreds of dollars per month to go to a gym where ONLY hot guys were allowed to have memberships.

by Anonymousreply 57January 7, 2024 3:26 PM

R57 "Hot guys" are narcissistic enough to think other guys are always leering at them, when in reality, nobody gives a shit about pretty boys begging for attention.

by Anonymousreply 58January 7, 2024 3:29 PM

I was surprised to learn that communal showers in school (which we did from about 7th grade, on) are mostly a thing of the past. Can someone explain why?

by Anonymousreply 59January 7, 2024 3:34 PM

In the past people thought gays were very rare, and easy to spot, and unlikely to be in a sporty place. Now they know better.

by Anonymousreply 61January 7, 2024 3:41 PM

The towel dance has become a lost art.

by Anonymousreply 62January 7, 2024 3:43 PM

No one showers after gym class anymore r59. People just put on their normal clothes and go about their day.

And when schools have showers for sports team, it is now almost always individual showers with curtains than the communal style showers that were normal in the past.

by Anonymousreply 63January 7, 2024 3:43 PM

I will assume that communal showers went away for liability reasons at the requests of the various school boards.

by Anonymousreply 64January 7, 2024 3:46 PM
Old saggy guys don't mind getting naked in the locker room.

At my gym there is an overload of "old" nakedness. The old guys don't have any problem walking about completely naked but it's not something anyone wants to see.

by Anonymousreply 65January 7, 2024 3:47 PM

Nudity is not there to turn you own r65, it's just a fact of life. When they are changing they will probably be naked.

That mindset is part of the problem. Can we stop considering it a big deal to see a human body that doesn't have clothes on.

by Anonymousreply 66January 7, 2024 3:50 PM

Yup. Always the repulsive old guys brushing their teeth naked at the sinks.

The young bros in their sweaty clothes in the sauna are equally as gross.

by Anonymousreply 67January 7, 2024 3:52 PM

R66 it's not a big deal now. But everyone needs a camera filter, so they control. Exhibitionism is all over the Internet. So always filtered through a camera. The shyness is about live situations that cannot be controlled.

by Anonymousreply 68January 7, 2024 3:53 PM

The worst are people who walk 1/4 mile to plop themselves in the middle of a gay nude beach and they don't go nude. They should be drowned.

by Anonymousreply 69January 7, 2024 3:55 PM

by Anonymousreply 70January 7, 2024 3:56 PM

The nice thing about communal showers even if there was nobody else there was the ability to shower with a lot of space around you. Also being naked in a sauna or steam room or swimming pool at the Y was a wonderful feeling. And this was the case throughout human history until just recently.

by Anonymousreply 72January 7, 2024 4:11 PM

The homos took over the sauna at the Y. They had to keep closing it to disinfect.

by Anonymousreply 73January 7, 2024 4:13 PM

Does anyone actually go to the gym to work out? Or is it just to look for dick? I hear the gyms love the new year, more money for a while with most people only going a couple of times.

by Anonymousreply 74January 7, 2024 4:17 PM

I will say, I hate running into co-workers in the locker room.

I mean, the last thing anyone wants is to see the big boss naked.

by Anonymousreply 75January 7, 2024 4:19 PM

The word was out that an old homo creepy peeper was salivating checking out the young guys' peen. They all decided to forgo their shower unless they were exhibitionists or gay, like you. What did you expect, a bunch of guys strutting around with hard-ons begging to be sucked by some old gym rat?

by Anonymousreply 76January 7, 2024 4:19 PM

R72 When did people swim naked in the pool at the Y?

by Anonymousreply 77January 7, 2024 4:29 PM

Whatever the explanation about “liability” (for what?) young guys I know are not only appalled at the idea of communal showers but are shocked there ever was such a thing. While I’m shocked kids work up a sweat in gym class then don’t shower.

by Anonymousreply 78January 7, 2024 4:31 PM

R77, nude all-male swimming was normal at the Y through most of the 20th century, tapering off starting in the 60s. This is periodically discussed with wonderment on DL and elsewhere online.

So no more naked Bushes (or bushes) sauntering around at Yale.

by Anonymousreply 84January 7, 2024 5:04 PM

When I was in high school way back in the early 90s nobody showered after gym class, so that's not a new thing at all.

by Anonymousreply 85January 7, 2024 5:19 PM

I think the 70s were the turning point; I was in high school in the 80s and there was no showering after gym (but there was communal showering after sports). But in some areas showering was the norm into the 80s and even 90s in high school, and communal showers in college gyms were definitely the norm into the 90s. I belonged to a gym in the 2000s that had only a very small communal shower (maybe six showerheads) where everyone crowded in; no one seemed to care. Also a sauna. Wish I'd taken more advantage of it then; I didn't know those days of casual hot male nudity were numbered.

by Anonymousreply 86January 7, 2024 6:28 PM

R57 is a frightened lunatic. “Perv on the guys” etc. and a whole host of whining losers. Naked, old, OMG they must be pervs. No you are the twisted perv hung up on the human body and your imagined exceptionalism. Grow the fuck up!

by Anonymousreply 87January 7, 2024 6:40 PM

R88… “lions, tigers and bears, oh my!” So silly. All my life I’ve been going to gyms and I am fit and good looking. Never have I felt uncomfortable around “old, fat, lurking pervs”, or young hot cruising pervs. I only take notice if on the very rare occasion I might be interested. I’ve never been remotely concerned that someone snaps a pic on their phone- frankly never seen it happen.

I’m going out to Equinox now and perhaps I should promise R57 that I will give a good verbal lashing to an old, fat, lurking perv when I run one down! Watch out!

by Anonymousreply 89January 7, 2024 7:01 PM

R41 simple: Control.

With selfies, they can control the situation, the lighting, the background.. and if they don't like what they see, they can filter and modify the image until it fits their ideal self-image.

by Anonymousreply 90January 7, 2024 7:13 PM

I lived in an old all-male dorm in the 80's in which there was a gym in the basement with an adjoining locker room. Everybody then would go from the gym to the lockers, get naked, and hit the open shower room. No one was shy, just natural. Of course, I spent many an hour there to ogle the flesh and ...I was in the best shape of my life.

by Anonymousreply 94January 8, 2024 2:01 AM

R80 When I went there I guess we wore bathing suits, because I would have remembered Having to swim naked. I don’t even remember taling the swim test, though I must have (late 70s). People did swim nude at the reservoir, though.

by Anonymousreply 95January 8, 2024 2:11 AM

After my workout today, I went into the sauna before showering. Of the nine guys there, seven guys were hot: 3 Russian straight guy wearing boxer briefs jabbering away, 2 indeterminate sexuality guys wearing board shorts, 2 gay guys wearing towels. The only 2 fully nude guys were gay trolls.

The gay trolls were gawking at the other men in the sauna. I hope they were there on a New Year’s guest pass, because I hadn’t seen them before and the gym has old gay trolls perving.

I took a look at the other hot guys, but did so DISCREETLY. There is way to unfocus a gaze and still get to see the attractive guys. Gay trolls wouldn’t be nearly as offensive if they didn’t lear. Is this so hard? Are the gay trolls retarded because otherwise they would put in the work to be hot?

by Anonymousreply 96January 8, 2024 3:44 AM
There is way to unfocus a gaze and still get to see the attractive guys.

by Anonymousreply 97January 8, 2024 4:08 AM

Old gay trolls have been around forever. In the glory years of nude public possibilities, there were always trolls to, and it didn't make everyone put on their clothes and go home.

by Anonymousreply 98January 8, 2024 4:25 AM

We always turned our backs to each other changing for PE ('90's), and no one showered after this class. "Quit staring at me, fag" was a popular joke.

I think the HIV epidemic forced people who never, ever thought about gays, gay lives, gay issues etc. to actually have to think about us, with a lot of the responses being homophobic. No one associated athleticism with gays in the 1960s and 1970s. The locker rooms and showers must have felt very comfortable for the straights, and now they're old and can't imagine covering themselves for the sake of anyone else's comfort.

by Anonymousreply 99January 8, 2024 4:47 AM

I'm hoping the pendulum swings back to nudity in the locker room. This paranoia about being naked is utterly ridiculous and absurd. It's too bad if the paranoids are offended. It's a fucking locker room , showers and sauna. Nudity is part of it. Deal with it.

up until the late 80s or so, there was a sort of philosophy that held the view that group male nudity was an important part of growing up and "getting over yourself" I remember our gym teacher in the early 80s explaining to us high school freshmen that we all had to shower after gym class, no exceptions. The first day he told us "some of you will have hair, some won't yet. and anyone who makes fun of another student's body will have to clean the locker room after school" I remember one kid cried when he had to get naked for the group shower, ironically the was he best looking and most developed of any of us. I realize later he was probably gay and afraid of getting hard. I definitely remember throughout the year, several guys gettting semi hard in the group shower. Even the guys I was sure weren't the least bit gay seemed to enjoy the comradery and the bonding that happens when you are all naked together. I was always worried about getting hard and If I started to feel that coming on, I'd just pretend I was done and leave. It was great for my confidence though, because I was very shy and after seeing everyone else naked, I felt far less self conscious about being naked in a group of other men.

by Anonymousreply 102January 8, 2024 12:28 PM

Freshman year in hs, I remember that we all had to shower after gym class in a gang shower. One of my friends kept his underpants on ( everyone else was naked). Once day the gym teacher told him that he had to be naked, so he took off his briefs and displayed the biggest dick anyone had ever seen; he was ashamed to be so big. meanwhile, all the rest of us died with envy. We just grew accustomed to seeing each other's naked bodies. By the time I was a senior, the school had lopped off ten minutes from class, so no one had the opportunity to shower. I wonder it the tight school schedules have anything to do with the practice of not showering in the adult gyms now.

by Anonymousreply 103January 8, 2024 12:36 PM

Lots of nakedness at my suburban VA gym. And my former DC high end gym. The fancier the gym, the more likely nakedness will be accepted.

by Anonymousreply 105January 8, 2024 1:38 PM

I don’t think I ever once looked at anyone’s dick when we were in the locker room or shower. I also don’t remember anyone having a problem with taking a shower. This would have been from 7th grade (early ‘70s) onwards.

Kids did snap towels at each other’s butts - it could really hurt - and stealing towels was another prank. You left your towel outside the shower. Somebody would steal it and you would have to walk around wet and naked, looking to see who had it. And the other guys wold have the attitude of “Why don’t you put some clothes on?” Really aggravating but I guess it built character, somehow.

by Anonymousreply 106January 8, 2024 1:40 PM

Men were more used to it decades ago because of mandatory military service, where no thought was given to the privacy of soldiers. My mid-1980s fraternity house had been built in a much earlier time when everyone served in the military. It had gang showers with no privacy, and even the toilet stalls didn't have doors. So when you were sitting on the toilet, someone was 8 feet in front of you shaving. You just had to get used to it.

by Anonymousreply 107January 8, 2024 1:44 PM

The advent of cell phone cameras and tiny high-res cameras that are easy to hide has killed public nudity and nudity in gyms and places like that.

There was a HUGE controversy back in the late 90s with a guy selling videos of naked college wrestlers at wrestling meets with a hidden camera ("Straight off the Mat", you can google it). That started the reduction of casual male nudity in public spaces. It accelerated and evaporated around 2008 with the advent of smart phones everywhere.

by Anonymousreply 110January 8, 2024 2:30 PM

R107 I don’t think that was typical of frat houses. In mine my roommate and I shared a bathroom with another set of roommates (the bathroom connected our two rooms).

by Anonymousreply 112January 8, 2024 2:34 PM
I think the HIV epidemic forced people who never, ever thought about gays, gay lives, gay issues etc. to actually have to think about us, with a lot of the responses being homophobic. No one associated athleticism with gays in the 1960s and 1970s. The locker rooms and showers must have felt very comfortable for the straights, and now they're old and can't imagine covering themselves for the sake of anyone else's comfort.

I think this is right. I also think even before that Stonewall & gay liberation also changed things. There was a general assumption before then that if you were in the shower no one was looking at you lustfully, and that changed quite a bit.

The Boomers and the Silent Generation were the ones to really bemoan the loss of open nudity in gym showers starting in the 1990s. I've noticed over the years on Datalounge we've had fewer and fewer threads complaining about "the towel dance" in the gym because the gay men who bemoan it are getting older and older and dying out--not so many posters any more remember the days when nudity was so open.

by Anonymousreply 114January 8, 2024 2:48 PM

I've noticed that the more upscale (i.e., expensive) the gym, such as Equinox, the more you see guys in the sauna and steam room with just a towel. At least half of them are just waiting to jerk off together anyway. It's at the far less expensive gyms where you see guys fully dressed in workout clothes, including shoes and socks, sitting in the sauna playing with their phone or listening to music, or, at an absolute minimum, they're wearing shorts. I'm not offering an explanation, just an observation.

by Anonymousreply 115January 8, 2024 2:58 PM

R111, it was common on my campus for fraternity houses built in the first half of the 20th century. YMMV.

by Anonymousreply 116January 8, 2024 3:22 PM

Yes, my mileage does vary. I’m not questioning your experience, just saying I didn’t have that experience. My frat and the frat and sorority houses I visited were all built in the early to mid 20th century. Some of them were originally mansions, though, that had been converted. The dorms also had private showers and toilet stalls.

by Anonymousreply 117January 8, 2024 3:33 PM

R112 the concept of body fascism is ridiculous

I prefer not see upsetting things in daily. On the street, seeing dog shit, puke and scabby hobos is inevitable.

But, if it’s an option, I far prefer avoid the sight of fat trolls. Especially if I’m paying to use a venue. Age doesn’t matter…there are a lot of hot 50 year old. I would hundreds of dollars per month to be in the presence of naked hot 50s to obese flabby 20 year olds.

I’ve worked hard tp have an envied body. And the thought of obese no efforts trolls perving really turns my stomach.

The private gym where people pay a membership is a relatively new thing. Planet Fitness, Gold’s, LA Fitness. (Gold’s gym was a famous gym in one location, it wasn’t a chain.) Athletes went to gyms. Average people didn’t. Unless it was at “the club”, the Y, or whatever. Gyms are meccas for gays now because gym bodies became popular. You didn’t used to find a huge amount of gays in the locker room.

by Anonymousreply 120January 8, 2024 3:47 PM

R119 no time and definitely no interest.

Those who want to have hot bodies do. Those that do not, don’t.

R114. And when it comes to nudity nowadays, we are living in paranoid times as well. It's ridiculous that the straight and gay younger crowd have turned into a bunch of nervous nellies overcome with paranoia..

by Anonymousreply 122January 8, 2024 3:50 PM

How desperate do you have to be to join a gym to rub one out to unsuspecting people who are there to become healthy? It’s like a priest complaining that altar boys wear their gowns over their clothes and don’t disrobe in front of the pastor anymore. “Where’s the fun in that, eh?”

by Anonymousreply 123January 8, 2024 3:54 PM

I have also noticed sometimes that some of the younger crowd at nude Black's Beach in San Diego wears their goddamn board shorts. It's a nude beach for Christ's sakes. You have to climb down a cliff to get there. It's a nude beach completely cut off off from the street and the public seeing you except for other nudists once you get down to the beach.! And no one is taking pictures. Why bother going through the effort of climbing down the cliff? Just go to a beach where bathing suits are required if you're that uptight. Thankfully, the nudists still outnumber these absurd paranoid sissy puritans who wear their shorts.

At some point over the past few years, Zoomers have decided that any male over the age of fifty is 'creepy'.

There's a younger female in my neighborhood - pretty blond girl around mid-20s. She walks a little Chihuahua, and this past summer it got loose from its leash. I helped her find it and she's been forever grateful to me (before that she wouldn't even say hi to me). Now when she walks by, she stops and we chat for a few minutes.

The guy across the street always yells out hi when he sees us outside talking. He's a very nice guy, around my age - 60. The girl never acknowledges him, never says hi. A few weeks ago he wished us both a Merry Christmas on Christmas day - she ignored him. I finally asked her why, and she responded "He's creepy. He always wants to talk to me." I explained he was being kind and sociable, but she wasn't having it.

When I used to go to Sandy Hook which had a gay section on the nude beach half the gays kept their trunks on where the straight section was completely nude.

Also when I used to go to the sauna in the Coles gym at NYU which is no longer there guys would use the sauna nude sitting on towels and I swear though you're not going to believe me there were no erections or jerking off. Other gays like me were on their best behavior and if there was any cruising it was very subtle. It was just a bunch of guys in the sauna like in the old days talking and socializing naked when the homosex was a no-no. Now guys go into sauna and steam rooms fully dressed in their gym clothes with their sneakers on. Stupid and gross.

Years ago, exactly in 2019, I wrote here on a thread that if you want to see the hottest straight guys getting naked without any shame in the shower and locker room, to apply to a cbpas, cbpo, tsa or ICE job.

They will send you to Fletc in glynco, Georgia for like 4 months. You will be in heaven. You will never see so many hot straight guys completely naked in front of you.

Im not the most masculine guy on the planet, nor the most affeminate, so they were able to know that I was gay, basically because i could not control my eyes. I thought that i was going to be treated very badly and feared homophobic behavior from these super uber masculine alpha guys, but nothing further from the truth.

What I experienced there was increadible. I had straight guys flirting with me, in the locker room while I, on purpose, stared at their cocks. Some would even laugh when I quicly took a glimpse at their cocks. God it was the first time I was around so many naked guys showing me their cocks, I felt amazing.

Apply if you can to any of these federal positions and go fletc. You will have the best time of your life.

This is naked on a beach. Years ago I was in shape naked at Sandy Hook. I wanted to take a nude stroll far away from where the people were. I got so far away I thought there was nobody around then I saw in the distance a fully clothed man with a telephoto lens camera. I was close enough to be able to tell it was pointed in my direction. Being that there was just sand and me I figured he wanted a picture of naked me. I let him take his picture or pictures not caring. I would like to see them now. Would I like them? Was I really worth taking a picture of? This was before the internet so they probably don't exist anymore unless some very old man is still slobbering over them.

I suffered abuse in high school but it was more from my teachers and guidance counselor than from communal showers which as far as I know nobody complained about it was just something natural to do getting clean before you got back into your regular day clothes. There were a few gay jokes but nobody really cared.

by Anonymousreply 164January 10, 2024 5:39 PM

Found this online (from 20 years ago):

With their roomy individual stalls and sturdy vinyl curtains, the locker-room showers at Otay Ranch High School look as if they belong in an elite fitness center. Everything is clean and sparkling and, most days, dry as a bone.

Students in this San Diego suburb would rather stink than shower at school, and coaches are helpless to force anyone to bathe after marathon two-hour physical education classes. "We encourage it, we suggest it, we do everything we can," says Gene Alim, veteran athletic director at Otay Ranch. "But the problem is that we're restricted as to what we can enforce."

In California, mandatory showers vanished after the legendary Proposition 13 slashed school funding in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and campuses stopped providing clean towels to students. "They could bring a towel from home, but most schools think that's a nightmare," says Wilson-Graham, the California consultant.

Fenway Park in Boston had the long troughs alongside the walls, not the round troughs. But still, those long troughs were hot. So many dicks on display. Who cared about the game?!

A steady 'stream' of cocks. It was piss heaven.

Sadly, the troughs are gone. At least there are no urinal dividers.

Fenway Park did, indeed, have at least one semi-circular trough in the late '80s-early to mid 90s when I was there. I saw it and walked right past it because I have a bad case of bashful bladder. I was waiting for a friend outside the same mens room when I saw Seiji Ozawa, music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra walk out of that mens room.

It’s the same reason a lot of young women don’t go topless on nude beaches in many European countries any more— cell cameras.

Hell you can find vids on YouTube of “such and such Beach “ in an obvious attempt to film young scantily clad people. It’s always men behind the camera and it’s obvious what they’re doing.

There’s no fucking privacy anymore.

by Anonymousreply 169January 11, 2024 12:43 AM

Ok but cameras existed before cell phones. Even cameras that were easy to hide. As a kid I remember seeing ads for “spy” cameras that were tiny, or that looked like cigarette lighters. Why didn’t people use these in locker rooms?

On beaches there was always plenty of opportunity to use a small, portable camera like most people owned, to take pictures. Then develop them yourself. Not as easy as now, but still.

by Anonymousreply 170January 11, 2024 2:47 PM

What about gyms in Europe? Anyone been lately?

Do they still have open showers and nakedness there?

by Anonymousreply 171January 11, 2024 2:55 PM

R170, there are indeed videos from the 90s of locker rooms and gym showers. Someone upthread referenced all the many wrestler weigh-ins that have been taken offline—I think some are still online. I remember as recently as a few years ago there were videos, seemingly from the 90s (not as late as the 2000s but seemingly not earlier than the 90s) of endless parades of naked, unselfconscious college guys going in and out of the locker room and gang showers. Gorgeous.

by Anonymousreply 172January 11, 2024 3:01 PM

by Anonymousreply 184January 12, 2024 4:56 PM

Years ago, I went to a university gym on a regular basis and there were group showers that required men to shower without bathing suits before entering the pool area. As a result, guys that swam early in the morning every day became very comfortable being naked around each other and a comradery developed even between the gay and straight guys, and it was kind of a great feeling. There was a swimsuit water extractor machine which would basically dry out your suit in a few minutes. Sometimes 2 or more guys would be in line ahead and most just held their suits in their hands and stood there naked. I remember one guy, truly one of the most beautiful, naturally muscled guys I have ever seen, strip off his suit and stand there over the machine with his ass just a few inches from my dick. I did get a semi despite trying to cover it up with my suit. When he turned around, I saw he had a beautiful cock, small but nicely proportioned. and it fit his body. he winked and said " hey man" as he walked by. Still jack off to that

by Anonymousreply 185January 12, 2024 5:22 PM

by Anonymousreply 193January 12, 2024 8:33 PM

It's difficult for nudity to make a comeback when they keep installing all these individual showers with curtains. I was a gym guest once with a friend where not only were the showers individual, but the each shower had another private area to dress after the shower with of course--another curtain. The steam room was naked but you could barely see anyone or even anyone in there. The entire locker room just seemed to have an atmosphere of paranoia if anyone saw a naked body.

by Anonymousreply 194January 12, 2024 10:13 PM

This demonization of nudity is pathological. All this suppression and oppression CAUSES problems with perversions, it doesn't keep us SAFE from them. But I really do think that it's not coming back due to our surveillance culture and pervasive cameras on cell phones and elsewhere.

by Anonymousreply 195January 12, 2024 10:55 PM

R194, I've known some who turn the shower curtains to advantage. In one gym where the showers were in individual stalls with blurred glass, a guy I knew would use the one handicapped stall—which had a curtain down to the floor—as a private room for fun with guys he met in the adjoining sauna. I fooled around with him in there once; it was risky but hot.

by Anonymousreply 196January 12, 2024 11:57 PM

So I started going again to this gym I hadn't been to in a while. They blast heavy metal and hard rock. It's a big gym and the members when I go are almost all under 40. Almost nobody showers there. The showers are totally separate with each also having a separate enclosed changing area. There's a small sauna and it seems like almost everyone who uses it goes in fully clothed. So before I went thinking of this thread I'm like should I change and shower there or not. I'm like yes for various logistical reasons. After working out I go into the sauna for about ten minutes just wearing a towel relaxing and enjoying it alone. Some guy comes practically running into it swinging the door open and when he sees me he is so startled and scared that he practically trips on his way out yelling to his friend that he has to get something from his locker first. So I left. You would think I was Jabba the hut masturbating in something.

by Anonymousreply 197January 13, 2024 3:08 AM

Interesting that so many posters here are mentioning people wearing their gym clothes into saunas. I raised that on another thread once and somebody refused to believe it.

And it's not just creepers with cell phones. It's all the guys who so the mirror selfies that can and will catch anyone else in the locker room on the camera. Although my gym has signs that say no phones in the locker rooms, it's routinely ignored and never enforced. Plus, the showers in my gym are filthy - I would never set foot in them for fear of getting some creeping crud. And, last but not least, most of the members at my gym are local, and probably live close enough to just go home and shower/change before work.

I'm not sure what the issue is - especially with the younger guys. They spend all this time in the gym, sculpting/shaving/waxing their bodies to near-perfection. So then they head to the showers or locker rooms and are suddenly 'bashful' around other guys ? They're afraid to be seen naked by another man ? I would think they'd enjoy the attention from any guy - young or old, gay or straight. It's a compliment to the hard work they've put in.

In middle school (we called it junior high school) in the early 60s the first gym class of the year for 7th graders was to stand in a line in the gym, pull down our shorts to prove to the gym teachers walking by that you had purchased a jock strap and were wearing it. It was a "health" requirement, or something like that.

I learned, and conformed, that if you were going to work out and/or play sports you wore a jock. I played sports in high school, and through college and the next several decades I went regularly to the gym, always stripped and changed into work out clothes, including a jock. Sometime in the late 90s I realized I was one of the few people that changed into a jock. Through the next decades I stopped wearing a jock, but did strip into workout clothes and take a shower after. I started to go to the gym in workout clothes and not even go to the lockerroom other than to piss. COVID came, and I went back to the gym... the lockerroom was empty, though the gym was full. This just all reporting and confirming on the foundational cultural change around the norms of changing rooms at gyms, etc.

Also, as was observed upthread: Millennials and Gen Z in lockerrooms might cover themselves carefully with towels... but sent dick pics at the drop of a hat. Odd? Well, no.... the dick pic you CONTROL your image. "Digital life" is so much preferable to "real life" for these kids.

New flash gramps r205…absolutely no hot guy is seeking attention from unattractive guys. For the majority of hotties, this means old fags. For 100% of the hot guys, this means fatties

Only if the hot guy is an actual whore, olds and fatties’ money will get their attention.

So has it always been, so it will always be.

R207 That's your truth, and it's... uh, true? But not universal. There are lots of guys who actually get off on the CMNM dynamic (look it up)... relishing being the center of attention, admired, and naked among the not naked.

R208 That's what I always thought. It doesn't matter who's looking at you - you need the attention. And a big reason why these guys are into bodybuilding is because they crave attention.

I prefer to use the hot water at the gym to shower instead of paying for it at my house.
