Sam LaRusso had a lot to deal with mentally throughout Cobra Kai season 3.
Picking up two weeks after the high school fight at the end of season 2, we learn that Sam has been suspended for two weeks. She’s lucky. Tory and Robby were expelled.
When she does go back, she suffers from a panic attack on the stairs, remembering the way Tory fought her during the season 2 finale. This is just the start of Sam’s trauma from the event.
All she wants to do is prove to Cobra Kai that she and her friends won’t be bullied. However, she suffers another panic attack when Tory calls her name in the middle of a fight. All she can do is watch as Hawk breaks Dimitri’s arm.
She lives with that guilt, although Dimitri never once blames her for it. None of them do. But Sam is done with karate and everything that comes with it.
Of course, it leads to more flashbacks to the Karate Kid movies. This time Daniel gets a chance to share how he was almost overcome by fear. It was Mr. Miyagi how helped him get over the fear and focus on the fight.
The two sparred for a while, giving Sam a chance to remember everything she loved about karate.
Would it be enough to help her the next time she faced Tory?
With Kreese now in charge of Cobra Kai, Johnny and Miguel had their own journeys. For Miguel, it was about learning to walk again. For Johnny, it involved setting up a new dojo.
Who would have thought that all of this would combine with Sam’s storyline?
With the Cobra Kai members continuing to bully and get away with it and now three dojos in town with all different opinions on karate, Sam and Miguel decided it was time to team up, especially after the two managed to convince the city council to allow the All Valley tournament to take place again.
Why have three dojos all against each other?
Sam and Miguel arrange a house party that turns into Miyagi-Do and Eagle Fang Karate finding a way to work together. They need to if they want a chance against Cobra Kai.
And it’s just in time. Cobra Kai crashes the house party, leading to various members of all the different dojos fighting against each other.
Sam, of course, fights against Tory. The two find themselves in the dojo, which is where Sam is able to use everything her father taught her about not giving into fear. Just as it looks like she’ll have another panic attack and Tory will win, Sam finds her inner strength.
And so, the two fight and Sam wins once more.
Tory may be able to channel her anger into her fight, but Sam is able to keep a clear head and stay one step ahead.
The rivalry isn’t done yet, though. In the end, Sam and Miguel get their dojos (and senseis) to team up, but it’s clear there is a fight to come with the Cobra Kais. There’s another fight between Sam and Tory to come in Cobra Kai season 4.
